30 Days to Emotional Awareness & Wellness Challenge
Day 1: Commit to the Journey
The goal of the 30 Days to Emotional Awareness & Wellness Challenge is to go beyond the normal rigmarole of emotional intelligence and provide real-life strategies designed to increase emotional awareness and promote emotional wellness. Unfortunately, the journey cannot be achieved without a conscious effort and commitment. These two factors are critical to completing the challenge.
As many of us are already aware, some more so than others, sometimes when we say we’re ready for change, we still have trouble making a commitment and following through to completion. This is probably because we are too heavily focused on our commitment to the desired outcomes, instead of being dedicated to the process itself. Some practitioners, researchers, and other enthusiasts refer to this as living with intention, but what does this really mean?
In the case of emotional awareness, living with intention involves making a significant lifestyle change, which demands personal commitment as well as takes time and requires support. For lifestyle changes to result in enduring and positive transformations that move us from meanings to breakthroughs, the American Psychological Association (n.d.) suggests the following tips:
1. Craft a strategic plan. Your plan is the roadmap that guides you through the process. During this 30-day challenge, the daily posts provided will offer a guiding outlook to facilitate the planning process.
2. Take small steps. Don’t try to eat the whole elephant at once! Each day we’ll cover a topic and you’ll be provided with tips, strategies, and recommendations aimed to help you increase your emotional awareness and promote emotional well-being.
3. Don’t multitask. This is probably one instance where multitasking is more harmful than helpful. Focus on one goal or change at a time to get in the habit of having good habits! Use the tools presented in the daily posts to help you work towards achieving emotional awareness.
4. Recruit an accountability partner. Being the player on the field and the cheerleader is exhausting, so why try? Instead, identify someone who will provide you with support and motivation to help keep you on track such as a mentor, colleague, or spouse.
5. Request help. We hear this advice often, yet this option is typically not leveraged as often as it should be. Never hesitate to reach out for assistance and bear in mind the number of resources you have that may be able to offer you support (including me!).
Today’s call of action in the 30 Days to Emotional Awareness & Wellness Challenge is for you to commit to the journey. Are YOU ready?
