30 Days to Emotional Awareness & Wellness Challenge
Day 6: Share Courage
The value of participating in an emotional journey lies in the unlimited opportunities to expand our knowledge, acquire and leverage an advanced skill set, and communicate critical insights. As part of our voyage to emotional awareness and wellness, it’s important that we share our understandings and experiences with others. Letting others in to our reality is an excellent way to encourage our continued self-improvement, boost our confidence, and campaign for others to seek a heightened sense of emotional awareness. This is what I refer to as ‘share courage’.
Share courage involves using insights we acquire from self-awareness, self-talk, and self-care exercises to have open discussions with others that strengthen our emotional fitness. Some of the big questions around share courage include: How confident do I feel about sharing? What to share? How much to share? Who to share it with? These questions are important in the discovery process.
A famous quote by a Scottish novelist, poet, essayist, musician and travel writer named Robert Louis Stevenson states:
Keep your fears to yourself but share your courage with others.
While Stevenson’s quote has some merit, it ill-advisedly discourages us from being transparent about what we share with others. Here’s another issue with Stevenson’s proposal: Keeping quiet about our fears may block us from accessing valuable feedback we need from others to appreciate multiple perspectives and consider alternatives that could invalidate feelings of anxiety.
Fear and anxiety are like kryptonite to emotions. If these types of negative feelings are not eliminated they continue to intensify and emotionally cripple the person in possession. For this reason, the self-awareness, positive self-talk, and self-care exercises introduced are critical. These activities help us avoid emotional takeovers driven by fear and anxiety as well as gain clarity and confidence.
Developing the courage to share self-discoveries may take more time for some than others, but it’s an important part of the process. The more we learn about ourselves and massage our emotional brains, the better we can confidently communicate how we feel with others. Take some time today to share at least one emotional insight or experience you’ve had thus far during the 30 Days to Emotional Awareness and Wellness Challenge with a close friend, family member, or colleague. During the conversation, be sure to offer your perceptions, communicate your uncertainties, and ask for feedback and support, and don't forget to invite them to start their own emotional journey!
