30 Days to Emotional Awareness & Wellness Challenge
Day 8: Channel Your Talents
As we observed, emotional agility requires transparency and exposure to rejection. Responding to rejection in a healthy way offers us opportunities for learning as well as provides clarity about areas for further development. Let’s explore how we can channel our existing talents to increase our emotional awareness and wellness.
To effectively leverage our talents, we need to first be able to identify our personal strengths and limitations. As many of us already know, there’s a massive number of articles and blogs that discuss the importance of being aware of our strengths and weaknesses as well as review how we can go about characterizing them. An equally extensive inventory of psychological instruments and self-report measures also exists.
Forbes Coaches Council (2018) identified 15 assessment tools for better understanding our strengths and weaknesses as well as leadership capabilities. This comprehensive list provides individuals seeking self-discovery with a collection of tools that could be used for skill development that vary by approach, cost, and focus. With so many resources, how do we know which philosophy to ascribe to or which test to take to get the answers we’re seeking? How can we apply the information we receive in an emotional way?
If you’ve never explored your strengths to reveal your innate talents, then here’s your chance to do it for free! There are several strength-based measures available through online platforms. Two tests recommended for self-discovery include:
- VIA Assessment—One of the only free, scientific assessments used to identify character strengths. It takes less than 15 minutes to complete and can be accessed at: https://www.viacharacter.org/Survey/Account/Register
- High 5 Test—A free strengths test with two assessment options—personal and peer review. This measure takes 10 to 15 minutes to complete and can be accessed at: https://high5test.com/
There are also some cost-effective options that you may find useful if you’re looking for a more in-depth report, such as the EQ-i 2.0 or the Clifton StrengthsFinder.
Once we have taken the time to discover our strengths and unique talents, we can use our knowledge of them to enhance our emotional awareness and vice versa. Greaves (n.d.) points out that channeling our strengths is a strategic approach to bouncing back from setbacks, learning new behaviors, and envisioning the big picture. Are you emotionally channeling and leveraging your strengths in an effective way?
